How gold letters are actually made

Gold signage is a metal finish, not a paint colour. The letters are formed in stainless steel, polished, then electroplated in a titanium bath so the gold becomes part of the metal surface rather than a layer sitting on top of it. That is why an electroplated letter keeps its colour where a sprayed one wears through.

Lighting changes the finish. A backlit gold letter reads as a lit silhouette with a halo on the wall, which keeps the metal as the star. A front-lit gold letter with a white acrylic face reads brighter at distance but loses some metal character after dark.

Keeping gold looking gold

• Brushed gold hides handling marks better than mirror gold on signs people touch
• Clean with a soft cloth and warm soapy water; abrasives dull the plating
• On exposed facades, a brushed finish ages more gracefully than a mirror one
• Sealed cable entries matter more than the finish outdoors: water is the failure mode
