Black Channel Letters
Black is the most specified sign colour and the one that varies most. Matte, satin and gloss black are three different products, and each behaves differently with lighting, weathering and fingerprints. Here is how we build each one.

Choosing the black

On a dark facade a black sign only reads if something contrasts with it — an illuminated white face, a halo washing the wall, or a lighter panel behind. That is a design decision rather than a manufacturing one, and it is worth settling before the drawings are made.
Black letters that light up
- Front-lit: a white or coloured acrylic face inside a black return — the standard retail look
- Backlit (halo): a black face with the light aimed at the wall, so the letter reads as a silhouette
- Front and back lit: a lit face plus a halo in one letter, for flagship sites
- Non-illuminated: black metal letters on a lighter wall, still the cleanest daytime option
Send a photo of the wall and tell us whether the sign is seen in daylight, at night, or both. The black is the easy part — the contrast is what makes the sign work.
Durability and maintenance
- Powder coating is the most durable finish for outdoor black letters
- Matte finishes need gentle cleaning: abrasives leave permanent marks
- Black shows dust more than light colours, so plan a twice-yearly clean
- IP65 to IP68 LED modules and sealed cable entries for anything outdoors
Summary
Pick the sheen first — matte, satin or gloss — then decide how the letter will be lit and what it will contrast against. Black signage fails for design reasons far more often than manufacturing ones, and both are easy to get right at the drawing stage.

Questions buyers ask
Is matte black harder to keep clean?
It shows handling marks and dust more than satin or gloss, but it cleans with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. On signs people touch, we usually recommend satin black instead.
Can black channel letters have a white illuminated face?
Yes — that is the most common retail construction: black returns, a white acrylic face and LED modules inside, in 3,000 K, 4,500 K, 6,500 K or 10,000 K.
What is your minimum order quantity?
